Online Gambling in America
13 Jul 2006
Even though the US Department of Justice considers internet gambling illegal, Americans are gambling away at their hearts content. Online casinos, sportsbooks and poker rooms are the places that Americans feel quite happy gambling at - internet gambling is booming and billions of dollars are being spent every year on this activity.
Not everyone, however, is happy with this trend. There are a few American lawmakers who have decided that internet gambling is evil. They believe that anything and everything to do with internet casinos, online gambling, sportsbooks and poker rooms should be made 100% illegal on American soil. Not only are they going after the online casinos based in the United States (there are not that many really) but they are also trying to push forward a law that would make gambling from off-shore online casinos illegal too.
One of the strongest supporters of this law is Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa) and he is the main honcho behind the sponsoring of the bill. The bill plans to crack down on the internet gambling industry by clarifying existing laws and making it easier to go after offenders. The "Unlawful Internet Gambling Act" plans to curb online gambling by cutting off its money supply - the bill aims to outlaw the use of credit cards, checks or money transfers to fund credit at online casinos. Whether this bill gets passed or not, it is no guarantee that it will stop internet gambling. The casinos are already illegal and gambling is booming, so this law doesn't seem to be phasing many citizens.
